A subliminal message image is an image that has some kind of hidden meaning. This can take many forms - you may have seen a t-shirt, for instance, that appears to have Chinese writing on it until you turn your head through 90 degrees and find out that, far from being Chinese, the message is quite rude. That's a simple form of using subliminal messages images.
They don't actually have to be very subtle. It's not easy to take in a whole picture at once, so we tend to focus on the parts of the image that attract us. Whether that is the smile on the Mona Lisa or the "beautiful people" who appear on so many advertisements on television.
Which brings us to television advertising. The imagery used is often very powerful and could quite easily be termed subliminal as the message being portrayed by the pictures is very different from the words and music being played.
Try this trick with a car advertisement:
Hmmm. Not quite the same message, huh?
This kind of "hide in plain sight" imagery is near enough a textbook example of using subliminal images. Your conscious mind will be concentrating on the sounds as well as the pictures. The images-only message will slip straight past your conscious mind into your subconscious one. A very neat trick indeed.
